It’s not a happy feeling to see your hair falling onto your work desk or seeing your hair being collected at the side of your pillow. Unlike men, woman experience hair loss differently, as their hormonal chemistry is different than males. A woman is also expected to be carrying a full head of hair for almost 90% of their lifetime. One of the frequent questions which I get asked about Menopause is, “Does menopause cause hair loss?”

If you are looking for a short answer, then yes it does. Now, let’s talk about it in detail.

Hair Loss

Formation of Hair

The main role in hair formation is of Keratin. Keratin is basically a protein, which synthesizes the production of nails, hair, and outer layers of skin. The hair follicles are below the scalp from the hair particles originate. The section which is visible is called the hair shaft.

Every hair has a lifespan of two to six years, in this period it grows up to its maximum length, and after that, the hair falls, and the new hair starts to grow and take its place. The normal hair fall frequency is around 100 hair strands a week. In the menopausal phase, it is common for the hair fall frequency to increase, as there is an imbalance in the hormones.

Symptoms of Hair loss

Hair fall is a general phenomenon. It is natural and happens to everybody, but hair loss happens when extreme hair fall takes place, so it becomes hard to distinguish sometimes until it’s too late. Look out for these symptoms-

  • Look out for large chunks of hair, whenever you are shampooing.
  • Check for hair strands around your pillow or bedside, wherever your head rests.
  • Check your temples and see check the quality of hair at that spot versus quality of hair at sides of the head.
  • Itchy or flaky scalp is also an indication of hair loss.
  • Redness or pimple on scalp from time to time.

If you are experiencing these symptoms, also check the severity of these symptoms, as that can indicate the hair loss stage you at.

Other various reasons

The main reason for the hair loss in menopausal phase is due to the hormonal imbalance, but there can be other internal, external factors which can accelerate your condition. These include-

Medical Causes

  • Thyroid disorders
  • Pituitary problems
  • Anemia
  • Chronic illnesses
  • Scarlet fever

Psychological Causes

  • Anxiety
  • Eating disorders
  • Emotional stress
  • Traumatic events
  • Depression

Lifestyle Triggers

  • Excess of vitamin A
  • Lack of vitamin D
  • Iron deficiency
  • Lack of protein
  • Lack of exercise
  • Pulling or twisting hair

Treatment

Hormone replacement therapy, also commonly known as HRT, is one of the common treatment which people go through in order to introduce hormones from an external source. The problem with HRT is that it comes with a plethora of risks and can even cause cancer in some patients. There are many Ayurvedic institutions which can stabilize and synthesize hormone production in your body. They do this with the help of various herbal medicines which can treat the menopause symptoms.

There are other Lifestyles adjustments which you can introduce in your life –

  • Number one change which you can make is in your diet including-
  • Limiting your dairy product usage
  • Eating two avocados daily

If you do not want to visit any Ayurvedic center than you can also take some herbal supplements for testosterone and hormones.
