Minimally Invasive Varicose Vein Treatment
Varicose veins occur when the valves in the veins fail to function correctly causing blood to pool or flow in the wrong direction, known as reflux. Usually affecting the legs, these veins can become swollen or even twisted. Next, they become visibly discolored, blue or dark purple, and they often bulge or protrude from the leg. In the past, surgical stripping was common practice. This procedure, performed under general or local anesthesia, was used to remove the affected veins through small incisions.
Advancements in Interventional Radiology vein treatments have provided procedures like Endovenous Thermal Ablation (EVTA) and Sclerotherapy. EVTA is the current gold standard for treating refluxing veins. Using minimally invasive lasers and ultrasound techniques EVTA deadens the defective veins and allows the body to eliminate them naturally. Treatment can alleviate varicose vein symptoms such as pain, aching legs and swollen ankles. Eliminating varicose and spider veins will also restore the leg’s physical appearance.
Applying Interventional Radiology procedures in a vein center reduces the discomfort and recovery time normally associated with varicose vein treatment. Furthermore, the risks involved with more invasive surgery are greatly diminished, as are the costs incurred by the patient.
